TEAK
True teak is indigenous to Southeast Asia, but similar wood species also grow in Africa.
Properties & Uses:
Teak is a yellow to dark brown hardwood which is extremely heavy, strong and durable. Often strongly figured, teak may show straight grain, mottled or fiddleback figures. It carves well, but because of its high value, is often used as a veneer. Scandinavian modern, and oriental furniture styles are often crafted of teak.
SUAR
Suar wood tree, also known as Albizia Saman or Monkeypod, is a large tropical rain tree that can grow up to heights of 25m. Characterized by its umbrella canopy, the tree naturally creates an insulated, cool climate underneath its thick, leafy branches.
Properties & Uses:
Due to its crisscrossed interlocking grains, Suar wood is resistant to cracking from wood movement and is highly sought-after for its robustness. Moderately heavy but extremely strong, Suar wood is highly resistant to decay and dry-wood termites. These characteristics make Suar wood highly favourable in fine furniture making compared to other woods.
ROSEWOOD
Rosewood gets its name from the fragrant smell that is released when the wood is cut. This is a dark-red or brown hardwood, derived from tropical trees.
Properties & Uses:
Heavy, hard, and dense, rosewood is noted for its stability and excellent decay resistance. Though commonly used for Oriental furniture, rosewood is now used for traditional European designs, as well as cabinetry. Quality rosewood furniture can be distinguished by silver lines, achieved by polishing with Chinese Tang Oil. This firm luster surface is different from the glossy imitation paint used on more inferior rosewood furniture.
MAHOGANY
Large, clear lumber. Mahogany trees get huge. They’re both tall and stout, yielding long, wide, knot and defect-free boards.
Properties & Uses:
Mahogany is known for its cooperative nature and easy sanding and machining, with a Goldilocks-esque balance of density thats just hard enough but not too hard. When the grain is straight and consistent, there’s not much that can go wrong. Mahogany can sometimes be rather plain and almost utilitarian, but on other pieces, it ascends to the heights of sophistication.
